Drifting can be defined as intentionally causing a vehicle to exceed its tires limits of adhesion, exhibiting a lateral slip, resulting in an oversteer condition, controlled by steering in the opposite direction (corrective steering). In simpler terms, drifting is a controlled slide through a turn with a front-rear drivetrain layout. This allows the driver to "drive sideways" and control his slide.
How do I start drifting?
While there are a few ways of initiating a drift in a car, a few stand out as the most effective and popular drifting techniques. These techniques include the use of the E-brake (handbrake) and clutch kicking. The first and some say easiest way to drift is to pull the E-Brake and open your throttle while you turn in, then countersteer once the car loses grip. This works because you will lock the rear wheels and the car will shift its weight when you steer, which causes the sideways slide along with the steering and E-brake. Another way to drift is to do a clutch kick. A clutch kick is better for under-powered cars. To do a clutch kick you must turn in to the turn while on the throttle, then dip the clutch and let the revs go up and release the clutch, which in turn will break your rear wheels loose. Do this very quickly to prevent damaging your car. Which way is the best way of drifting? It’s all personal preference when it comes to drifting. Most setups are not alike. Fine tune your setup to work how you want it to and success will come quickly.

Is Powersliding drifting? A similar technique called power sliding is often incorrectly called Drifting both in and out of video games. The key difference between a power slide and a drift is that a power slide is initiated with brute force and kinetic energy, where as a drift is initiated with varying techniques involving the shift of weight in the car and the shift of power between the wheels. This is one of the reasons why a LSD (limited slip differential) and a RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) car are essential to drifting.
